Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain Crowns - Elmwood Park

At Bright Dental of Logan Square, we offer porcelain crowns to restore both the function and appearance of damaged teeth. A dental crown, sometimes referred to as a "cap," is a tooth-shaped covering that encases the entire visible portion of a damaged tooth. Unlike fillings, which only cover a small part of a tooth, a crown completely surrounds the tooth, providing additional protection and strength. Porcelain crowns are an excellent option for patients who need a more durable and aesthetically pleasing solution to repair their teeth.

What Are Porcelain Crowns?

Porcelain crowns are used when a tooth has been broken, decayed, or damaged to the point that fillings are no longer effective. They restore a tooth to its original shape, size, and function while providing a natural appearance. These crowns are made from a combination of materials, but porcelain is the most popular choice because it closely resembles the look and feel of natural teeth. They are often used for teeth in the front of the mouth, where aesthetics are a priority, but they can also be used for molars that require extra strength.

Porcelain crowns can:

     - Strengthen a damaged or weakened tooth

     - Improve the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth

     - Restore a tooth’s original shape and function

     - Protect a tooth after a root canal treatment

     - Correct a broken or fractured tooth

The Procedure for Getting Porcelain Crowns

Getting a porcelain crown typically requires two visits to our Chicago cosmetic dentist practice. Here’s what you can expect during each visit:

Visit 1: Preparing the Tooth

During the first visit, Dr. Chae or Dr. Choi will prepare your tooth for the crown by reshaping it. This often involves removing a portion of the damaged tooth so that the crown fits securely and comfortably. Once your tooth is properly reshaped, we will take an impression of the tooth to create a custom crown. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the permanent crown is crafted to match your tooth’s size, shape, and color. To protect your tooth until your next visit, a temporary crown will be placed over the prepared tooth.

Visit 2: Fitting the Permanent Crown

When you return to Bright Dental of Logan Square, our Chicago cosmetic dentist will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent porcelain crown over your prepared tooth. We will ensure that the crown fits properly and comfortably, making any necessary adjustments. Once the fit and bite are perfect, the crown will be permanently cemented into place. After the procedure, you can enjoy a beautiful, functional tooth that blends seamlessly with your natural smile.

Why Choose Porcelain Crowns?

Porcelain crowns offer many benefits, including:

     - Natural Appearance: Porcelain closely mimics the translucency of natural teeth, making it an ideal choice for visible teeth.

     - Durability: Porcelain crowns are strong and durable, providing long-lasting protection for damaged teeth.

     - Customization: Our Chicago cosmetic dentist will custom design your porcelain crown to match your natural tooth color and shape, ensuring a perfect fit for our patients.

     - Preservation of Tooth Structure: Unlike other restoration options, crowns are designed to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.

Caring for Your Porcelain Crown

After your porcelain crown is placed, it's important to care for it just like you would your natural teeth. Brushing and flossing daily, along with regular dental checkups, will help ensure that your crown stays in good condition. Be sure to avoid biting down on hard objects or using your teeth as tools to prevent damage to your crown.
